Job Description Summary:
The Electron Microscopy Facility at The University of Kansas Medical Center specializes in high quality EM services supporting a broad range of scientific projects. The EM Facility is part of the larger Integrative Imaging Core at the University and is responsive to service requests from basic, translational, and clinical researchers. The EM Facility is expanding to add cryo-EM services to the portfolio and is looking to hire a Senior Scientist to provide day-to-day management of the facility including delivery of services, project collaboration and oversight, and protocol development and troubleshooting. The Senior Scientist of the EM Facility reports to the Imaging Facility Leadership and works closely with individual researchers to execute the goals and services of the EM Facility including SEM, TEM and cryo-EM. The Senior Scientist will be the campus cryo-EM specialist. The Senior Scientist will manage fee-for-service lab usage, provide training to researchers, and communicate effectively with lab clients.

Job Description:

Required Qualifications:
  • PhD in a life sciences discipline
  • with Experience operating SEM, TEM, or cryo-EM equipment. Doctoral work is included as experience.
  • The position requires an understanding of electron microscopy protocols and techniques as well as an ability to disseminate those best practices to fellow researchers. Ability to perform collaboratively across a wide range of scientific disciplines and backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • One-year previous experience working in a core environment. One year or more experience preparing and imaging samples for single particle analysis on a cryo-EM platform from a variety of protein sources.
  • Five years' experience operating EM equipment.
  • Previous experience with submission of samples to a national facility. Previous experience with negative staining and imaging techniques and tissue structure identification in biological samples. Track record of (cryo-)EM publications.
Job Duties Outlined:
  • The Senior Scientist will be responsible for creating, utilizing, and maintaining appropriate SOPs for the Glacios cryo-EM at KUMC. This responsibility will encompass sample preparation, grid clipping, grid loading and imaging, data transfer and storage and front-line analysis of samples.
  • The Senior Scientist will be the primary point of contact for all cryo-EM services within the facility. This will require clear and timely communication with researchers, responsible handling of deliverables and appropriate project feedback and prioritization under the direction of the Imaging Facility Leadership.
  • The Senior Scientist will be the primary point of contact for collection of equipment logs, service needs and training updates on the cryo-EM equipment.
  • The Senior Scientist will gather and run primary analysis of all cryo-EM data and will additionally be responsible for maintenance of a data hygiene plan developed in coordination with the Imaging Facility Leadership.
  • The Senior Scientist will participate in publication of data derived from activities in the Imaging Facility.
  • The Senior Scientist will provide support for all SEM and TEM activities occurring throughout the lab in coordination with other core staff members.
  • The Senior Scientist will be responsible for developing new services and troubleshooting issues that arise in current or emerging technologies in consultation with the Imaging Facility Leadership.
  • The Senior Scientist will be responsible for daily maintenance of equipment utilized to deliver core services. This includes ensuring proper calibration, cleaning coordination with vendors, and other upkeep as needed.
  • The Senior Scientist will participate in experimental design, consultation and data presentation as needed to support investigators and grant submissions.
  • The Senior Scientist will provide formal and informal training sessions on SEM, TEM and cryo-EM to PIs, trainees, and lab staff on a regular basis.
  • The Senior Scientist will participate in gathering necessary information for business model evaluation and annual self-study reporting requirements.
  • The Senior Scientist will maintain laboratory protocols, data archives, project notebooks and any other scientific or otherwise technical records that are kept as good laboratory practice on collaboration with the members of the core.
  • The Senior Scientist will identify items for procurement and work with administrative staff as needed to complete purchases.
  • The Senior Scientist will ensure that all projects conducted in the facility are tracked through project tracking software.
