CONTEXT OF THE JOB:



The Center for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD) is a multi-disciplinary, comprehensive student learning and psychological wellbeing program providing a diverse array of services so that undergraduate and graduate students can be more successful in their academic, personal, and career pursuits. The CCSD is accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services, Inc. (IACS) and sponsors three levels of doctoral training for psychologists including an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited doctoral internship in health psychology.



The Center’s efforts focus on helping students reduce psychological symptoms, cope with complicated life events and developmental tasks, improve interpersonal skills and relationships and increase self-knowledge and problem-solving ability. The Center promotes equality and respect for individual and cultural differences, focuses on diversity and inclusion as well as encouraging on-going education regarding issues faced by students in minoritized groups. CCSD is part of the Division of Student Life which contributes to and facilitates critical learning and development within healthy, inclusive, and supportive communities so that all students may thrive.



Under the limited direction of the Division of Student Life Assistant Vice President for Student Wellbeing, the Director provides leadership to enhance the operations, programs, and service delivery of the CCSD. As a member of the Student Life Senior Leadership team, the Director initiates strategic planning and assessment activities to optimize and coordinate planning, delivery, and evaluation of mental health services for a diverse student body. The Director oversees personnel selection and evaluation, program planning and evaluation, and budget planning and management of resources within CCSD. The Director and members of the CCSD staff set and carry out annual goals and objectives, continuously assessing, monitoring, and improving service offerings and CCSD’s model of care in response to the changing needs of students and the University. The Director is called upon to provide guidance to the broad University of Delaware community on student mental health emergencies and services.



The work of the Director of the Center for Counseling and Student Development supports the University’s mission and vision of comprehensive wellbeing services for students, as well as the strategic initiatives of the Division of Student Life to ensure student success. Members of the Student Life Wellbeing team engage with all aspects of the University community to engender a campus environment that supports health and wellness and creates a foundation for life-long wellbeing by providing Blue Hens with the services, care, and skills to make healthy choices.



The staff of the Center are dedicated to working together to serve students and to provide a strong training program for new clinicians. The Director is responsible for supporting and attending to the needs of all staff in the work environment. The Director plays a significant leadership role in focusing the entire campus on addressing student mental health wellbeing and initiating efforts to do so in ways that supplement or support the clinical work of the staff.



MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:




  • Serve as a champion for the student experience working to advance mental health services, resources, and systems at UD to support student success.



  • Collaborate with the CCSD staff team to establish the annual goals and priorities for the Center to ensure appropriate alignment with Division of Student Life strategic planning and initiatives. Initiate strategic planning and assessment activities to both guide and inform capital planning, counseling and educational program and services development.



  • Direct the administrative operations in the Center and establish appropriate policies and procedures to support student needs with counseling and student development services. Ensure execution of effective record-keeping as well as general policies and procedures.



  • Develop policies and procedures as needed, to reflect the changing needs of students, legal guidelines, and best practices.



  • Lead an interdisciplinary team with a deep and broad understanding of and commitment to serving a globally diverse student body. Foster a work environment that enhances and facilitates the wellbeing and growth of staff members that attends to employee wellbeing, enhances recruitment, and attends to staff retention and satisfaction, with a specific focus on facilitating growth and mentoring of BIPOC staff.



  • Manage crisis situations arising on campus and work weekend and/or evening hours as necessary in response to crises.



  • Facilitate highly sensitive and challenging conversations with community members, families, and students that require thorough familiarity of ethical and legal procedures. Work to resolve and de-escalate highly complex student situations in a manner that best supports both the student and institutional needs.



  • Lead strategic planning and assessment activities to both guide and inform capital planning, counseling and educational program, and services development.



  • Direct the administrative operations in the Center and establish appropriate policies and procedures to support student needs with counseling and student development services.



  • Ensure execution of effective record-keeping as well as general policies and procedures.



  • Develop and administer an annual operating budget totaling approximately $3 million.



  • Support fundraising efforts of the Division of Student Life by pursuing philanthropic and grant-based funding opportunities, meeting with donors and supporting stewardship efforts.



  • Advise and counsel the University administration and faculty on student mental health and developmental issues; serve on university committees and task forces



  • Provide leadership for a variety of SL and University committees including the Campus Coalition for Wellbeing and Mental Health, Campus Coalition for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention, and the Campus Wellbeing Collaborative.



  • Establish, grow, and maintain relationships with community mental health partners throughout the City of Newark and State of Delaware as an advocate for the mental health needs of all UD students.



  • Serve as or oversee the membership of the Associate Director of Clinical Programs on the University’s Student Behavioral Consultation Team.



  • Complete an annual report at the completion of each academic year summarizing efforts and results of CCSD’s clinical, training and outreach programs. This should highlight clinical utilization, new initiatives, and future goals for the center.



  • Perform the duties of a psychologist and provide professional leadership to other mental health professionals on- and off-campus.



  • Serve as an active participant in the Association of University College Counseling Center Directors (AUCCCD).



  • Other duties, as assigned.




QUALIFICATIONS:




  • Doctoral degree in counseling or clinical psychology or a closely related field, preferably from an academic department accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).



  • At least seven years of postdoctoral experience, including three years of senior-level administrative experience.



  • Licensure (or eligibility) as a psychologist in the State of Delaware.



  • Experience with administrative supervision of counseling staff and significant experience providing clinical supervision to a diverse staff



  • Excellent interpersonal communication, group facilitation, and program development skills.



  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and off-campus stakeholders.



  • Experience working with traditional college age population and issues, (e.g., depression, anxiety, suicidality, eating disorders, alcohol, and drugs).



  • Advanced experience with minoritized populations, demonstrated cultural humility and curiosity is essential and should be shown through lived experience, research or presentations and/or skill in expressing such knowledge in person in an interview setting.



  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of cultural competency, social justice work, and the complexities of equity and inclusion is essential and should be shown through graduate coursework, publications, and/or presentations, as well as skill in expressing such knowledge in person in an interview setting.



  • Understanding of the impact of marginalization, inequality, and identity of students on the individual and collective wellbeing of students.



  • Experience developing and delivering programs and services in a university counseling center. Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.



  • Knowledge of modern counseling/psychotherapy practices and methods.



  • Commitment to respond appropriately and in a timely manner to emergency situations.



  • Experience and knowledge in these areas: psychotherapy legal and ethical issues, Title IX, suicide prevention programs for college students, and risk management.



  • Reputation as a resourceful and innovative leader.



  • Ability to develop financial plans and manage resources.



  • Knowledge of budgeting and fiscal management principles and procedures.



  • Knowledge of electronic medical records systems (e.g., Titanium, Point and Click).



  • Reputation as a fair-minded, consistent, and approachable supervisor who holds staff to high standards of performance.



  • Ability to assess training and in-service needs and to provide consultation and arrange/facilitate training and seminars.



  • Knowledge of related accreditation, licensure, and certification requirements.



  • Advanced understanding of state of Delaware Child Abuse Reporting law, FERPA, Title IX, Clery Act, and trends in legal liability within college counseling center operations.



  • Experience with and knowledge of codes of ethics of the American Psychological Association and the International Accreditation of Counseling Services, Inc.



  • Experience as a clinical supervisor and with an internship program in a college or university counseling center, preferably one accredited by the American Psychological Association.



  • Experience in designing mental health initiatives that incorporate multicultural diversity, inclusivity and social justice concepts and principles.



  • Experience with strategic planning and administrative management.



  • Progressive operational, administrative, and management experience; in-depth understanding of the changing demographics and the psychological challenges and mental health needs of diverse student populations.



  • Excellent record of understanding mental health barriers that impede students’ progress to graduation and expert knowledge of best practices in college counseling services.



  • Understanding of a systems perspective about strategic outreach; experience developing clinical and operational protocols in a campus counseling setting.



  • An understanding of the dynamics of individual and group counseling practices.



  • Demonstrated expertise in crisis intervention and management.



  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.
