The Role:

The Content Writer/Web Editor will be an excellent writer and hands-on professional who will play a significant role in creating, transitioning and managing content for the Center’s new website launching in Spring 2021, as well as helping to draft and enhance other Center communications. We are looking for a person adept at translating complex topics into clear and easy-to-understand editorial and marketing content that highlights the Center’s work, one who is also experienced in using website platforms such as WordPress. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills; have a proven ability to multitask and manage numerous projects and deadlines; exercise good judgment, and be able to work both independently and as part of a team. 

This position will be based in New York City or Washington, DC but is currently remote.

Primary Responsibilities:

Writing, Editing and Content Development

  • Create compelling editorial and marketing content for the Center’s website and other platforms that clearly conveys the organization’s mission and promotes its broad range of work and expertise.
  • Review and stay up-to-date on developments in the organization’s global and U.S. legal and policy work and use editorial judgement to generate ideas for content.
  • Write, edit, and proofread various communications as needed, including e-mailings, newsletters, print publications, op-eds, and scripts for videos and speaking engagements.
  • Translate complex legal topics and reproductive rights and health issues into clear, accurate and easy-to-understand content for supporters, donors and other audiences.
  • Help develop messaging on the Center’s court cases and other work.
  • Develop and maintain an editorial style guide.
  • Work with members of other departments, including program and development teams, to obtain programmatic review and feedback on content.
  • Develop and maintain editorial calendars and schedules and ensure deadlines are met.
  • Website Management

  • Manage and update the organization’s website content using WordPress.
  • Suggest ways to improve and enhance the content and the use and flow of the site.
  • Assist in transitioning web content to a new platform, including reviewing content and tagging.
  • Review photo libraries to determine most appropriate images for specific content; manage media library.
  • Other duties as assigned. 


  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.
  • Superb editing and writing skills, with the ability to shape clear and compelling content with precise attention to detail and facts.
  • At least eight or more years of relevant experience working in communications, marketing, non-profit sector, editorial, or journalism.
  • Experience writing and editing web content, as well as a variety of communications materials, such as newsletters, scripts, presentations, e-mailings, brochures, and scripts.
  • Experience in using WordPress (preferably the WordPress Block Editor) and managing website content.
  • Knowledge of and experience in writing for SEO.
  • Demonstrated ability to research, write, fact-check and edit a variety of communication pieces for target audiences with a minimal amount of supervision.
  • Excellent professional, editorial and ethical judgment.
  • Keen attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to translate complex legal and policy issues into accessible, compelling content for a lay audience.
  • Creative, hands-on self-starter with strong work ethic.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and manage multiple projects and work under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the confidence to interact with and influence personnel at all levels, responsiveness, flexibility, initiative, decision making, conflict resolution, and tact.
  • Pluses:

  • Experience in reproductive rights, social activism or related field.
  • Experience working in legal or policy areas.
  • Experience working with web and graphic designers and with workflow programs.
