Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Seven (7) years of full-time professional experience working in higher education. Professional staff supervision experience. Strategic planning experience. Project management experience. Budget management experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience generating revenue through conferences and facilities rentals. Experience supporting a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students. Crisis management experience. Data software and analysis experience. Experience with event software (i.e SB Engaged, 25Live, etc).

Brief Description of Duties:
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, the Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives and Operations serves as a senior leader in the Office of Student Life. The Senior Director leads and collaborates with each department within Student Life to implement the strategic and assessment plan to further the goals and objectives of the Office of Student Life and possesses strong communication, marketing and organizational skills. The Senior Director analyzes and assesses issues, including short and long term implications at the unit, divisional, and institutional level, and makes recommendations to the Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students. The Senior Director oversees analysis and policy development for issues and processes. The Senior Director strives to ensure that students, faculty, and staff are well informed about programs, events, and services that enrich the student experience. The Senior Director uses a variety of project management platforms to develop and execute projects and initiatives. The Senior Director works collaboratively with other colleagues across Student Affairs and leads the planning and coordination of the Student Life Continuity of Operations Team during campus emergencies. In the absence of the AVP, the Senior Director will assume all leadership responsibilities in the Office of Student Life, including but not limited to, decisions regarding staffing, budget and/or operational needs. Incumbent must have proven experience leading teams and effectively working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Student Life Strategic Planning, Assessment, and Communication
    • The Senior Director provides leadership for strategic planning, communications, organizational effectiveness, development, assessment, and process improvement initiatives for the Office of Student Life. The Senior Director collaborates with each department in Student Life to ensure proper execution of goals and objectives. In collaboration with the CRAFT (Communications, Research, Assessment, Fundraising, and Technology) team, the Senior Director leads a culture of assessment and improvement in which units undertake regular program evaluation and data analysis to ensure alignment with strategic priorities. The Senior Director enhances divisional effectiveness by developing, implementing, and managing assessment, evaluation, and planning processes and infrastructures, and by providing data analysis, program assessment, and strategic planning support for all units within Student Life. Working with the Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications, the Senior Director builds the Student Life brand, communication and outreach strategies to keep students, faculty, and staff informed and strengthen their sense of belonging. The Senior Director serves on the Student Affairs Organizational Excellence committee and participates in all Division of Student Affairs meetings and activities.
  • Student Life Business Development
    • In collaboration with colleagues, the Senior Director plays a pivotal role in developing and leading a marketing and revenue generating strategy for the Annual Giving Day for WUSB Radio, Student Centers, Marching Band, and the Student Emergency Support Fund. The Senior Director builds a strong connection and partnership with the Office of Alumni Affairs and Office of Advancement to solicit donors for strategic funding needs. The Senior Director coordinates and leads a business development strategy to generate revenue through various campus departments and stakeholders utilizing Student Life resources and facilities. The Senior Director partners with the Faculty Student Association (FSA) and Advancement to create sponsorship opportunities and share resources for any event or program hosted by departments within Student Life.
  • Supervision, Performance Management, and Budget
    • The Senior Director supervises the Director of Student Centers, Assistant Director of Student Life Marketing and Communications, and Student Life Business Administrator. The Senior Director indirectly supervises hourly student employees and interns assigned to the department. The Senior Director coordinates and directs staff in the oversight of operational, administrative, and personnel policies and procedures for the Office of Student Life. These activities include team member recruitment, retention, onboarding, development, and performance management. In this capacity, the Senior Director manages a number of highly confidential activities. The Senior Director undertakes continuous review of processes and procedures to ensure ongoing improvement and alignment with divisional and institutional objectives. In collaboration with the Business Administrator, the Senior Director develops an onboarding and recognition program for all team members. In partnership with the Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students and the Business Administrator, the Senior Director manages the Student Life budget, ensuring efficient and effective use of existing resources. This includes budget planning, analysis, compliance, and management for the Office of Student Life.
  • Special Events and Engagement
    • The Senior Director coordinates and leads special events and engagement initiatives, including student led/generated ideas, campus traditions, major programs, and public appearances. The Senior Director supports the Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students during major campus wide events such as Convocation, Welcome Week, Homecoming, Family Weekend, and Commencement.
  • Student Life Continuity of Operations
    • In collaboration with the Associate Dean of Students, the Senior Director oversees the Student Life Continuity of Operations team during emergencies, incidents, and specific issues impacting Stony Brook students on or off-campus. The Senior Director coordinates and directs the efforts of the Student Life team in the execution of the Student Life emergency plan, including all communication, supplies, and equipment. The Senior Director collaborates with campus partners and stakeholders, including Campus Operations and Maintenance, Enterprise Risk Management, and Student Activities Center and Stony Brook Union tenants to ensure proper documentation and post-incident evaluation.
  • Capital Projects and Renovations
    • The Senior Director facilitates and collaborates with the Campus Operations and Maintenance team; Campus Planning, Design, and Construction team; and Student Life Directors on space planning, renovations, and capital improvements for spaces under the purview of Student Life and the Division of Student Affairs. The Senior Director will collaborate with vendors and stakeholders on the selection of furniture, fixtures, equipment, and designs.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
