ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: The Plant Controller is a business partner with the plant management. They are responsible for the financial activities at the plant and are accountable for the plant-level responsibilities. The plant controller will support both plant and corporate functions. Supervise and motivate staff, overseeing accounts payable and accounts receivable in Modesto. The focus will be on plant level reporting and activities, while supporting the Corporate Controller with key higher level corporate needs. Manage the plants month-end close procedures, ensuring their completion timely and accurately. Perform general account analysis and reconciliations, including bank statements, fixed assets, accruals, and prepaid expenses. 1099 filing, various government agencies filing, sales tax, property tax, exercise tax, and others. Assist in preparation of annual budget and periodic financial forecasting. Support the Corporate Controller in coordinating with external accountants to complete annual financial statement audit and tax return preparation. Partner with Controller, CFO, and business partners to ensure timely and accurate financial data is provided to support key business decisions. Drive process improvements. Other accounting related tasks will be assigned as needed.

SKILLS:

Accounting Operations Knowledge of accounting operations including A/R, Credit and Collections, A/P, GL, Cost Accounting, Fixed Assets, Inventory Accounting and Revenue Recognition to ensure accuracy.

Attention to Detail Completes tasks efficiently and accurately while paying close attention to detail.

Audits Conduct and/ or assist with audits and inspections of performance and activities.

Month End / Year End Ensure month end close and year end close is completed in accordance with timelines, including completion of monthly journal entries, account analysis and account reconciliations.

Performance Management Manages departmental performance measures, priorities, including visual controls and provides regular progress.

REQUIREMENTS: B.S. in Business, Accounting or Finance. Proven working experience as Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller, or Controller. Strong knowledge of MS Excel and familiarity with accounting software (Business Central preferred). Excellent data analysis and problem-solving abilities, strong attention to detail, and familiarity with inventory cost environment is highly preferred.

FOOD SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Place high priority on food safety, quality, and sanitation by understanding and executing Mercer Food’s food safety and sanitation policies and procedures.
  • Hold self and others accountable to Mercer Foods food safety & sanitation guidelines and policies by communicating any food safety incident, observation, or opportunity to your leadership team or teammates.
  • In the absence of Controller, serves as back up to ensure all food safety, quality objectives and SQF system requirements are met.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: rare lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; rare stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and frequent fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires the following percentages of time committed to physical activity: 70% or more sitting, 20% or more walking, and 20% or more standing. The job is performed under some temperature variations and in a food manufacturing office environment. Unrestricted visual and audio abilities are required for the safety of all employees. The ability to lift to 40 lbs. is required.
